Cut Down On Dust In Your House

Dust is made up from bits of dirt, hair skin particles, food, insect droppings and more. If your house is full of dust, it can cause allergen problems and make breathing less than comfortable. Too much dust in the house can even cause you to have trouble sleeping or suffer from headaches or nausea more than you would otherwise. So here are some ways to reduce the amount of dust in your house and make a better living environment for you or your family.

Seal Your Home

A lot of dust is going to come inside from outdoors. If you seal up your windows and any places that are open to the outside, you will cut back the dust accumulation considerably. You can seal the edges of windows or any cracks you find with caulking. This has the added benefit of controlling the temperature in your home better, so you don’t have to pay as much for heating or cooling.

Clean Regularly

Probably the most important way to cut back on the dust in your house is to clean your home on a regular basis. Sweep floors, dust everywhere and ensure that you are keeping dust at bay by dealing with it swiftly. If you let the dust accumulate, your problem will be worse by the time you get around to cleaning it up. But conducting regular cleaning sessions will reduce the overall dust in your house and make it easier to keep it clean.

Check The Dryer

Your dryer can be a major source of dust in the house. If the lint is piling up, it causes dust to spread through the house and can create a fire hazard too. Don’t just clean out the lint trap when you are doing the laundry. Also check behind the dryer to see if dust is being let out into your house.

Some people do not provide ample ventilation for their dryer, and the lint just gathers in the house, creating a major dust problem. You can either vent the dryer to the outside of the house and put your dust problem out there or you can clean up the dust that exits the dryer every so often.

Just remember to deal with the problem right away. If you let lint blow into your house, it can easily travel throughout the rest of your house and increase your dust problem exponentially.

Chimneys
Need Special Attention

If your house has a fireplace, that ought to be one of the first places you look to reduce dust. While keeping the actual fireplace clean will help, you also need to take care of the chimney itself. Dust and soot can accumulate in this hard-to-reach area, and you may not be able to clean it out yourself. You will probably have to call in a chimney sweep to do the cleaning for you, and you should have this service performed at least once a year. The more often it is done, the cleaner your house will be.
